SD 88 Candidate Having Second Thoughts???

The highlighter has learned that SD 88 candidate Daphene Walker is having second thoughts about becoming a school board member. Sources tell the highlighter Daphene Walker has learned that if she wins the election, she will become another puppet of Chrissy Welch. Chrissy Welch is the former attorney of SD88 who was fired twice and wants his job back. Also, she is not happy with running mate Tommie Miller because of his horrible reputation.

What do you know about Daphene Walker? What do you think about Chrissy Welch, who charged SD88 $225,000 in a five month period, being re-hired by his friends if they gain majority board?

I am so glad to hear that and this time its not a rumor.I am a McKinley School parent. I was dropping my daughter off at school last week and I got a chance to talk to Ms. Walker and Mr. wicks. They were both at Mckinley School and it seemed that they were getting along well and talking the same talk about the welfare of our children. While talking to the two of them Ms. Walker made it clear that if she got a seat on the board that she would not be operating as one of Welch / Millers puppets.Ms. Walker is a strong woman and not some political whore that miller or Welch has under thier wings. Is Walker really a third person that wicks and Dorris are running in case Dorothy smith does not make it on election day? Makes one wonder if Miller and Welch has been had again.Well seeing that Welch was fired twice from SD88 this would not surprise me.I am glad that Walker has seen the light and found out that she has been bamboosled.....Dont worry Daphnie walker....Stay in tuned with Dorris and Wicks and you will be a front runner in 2009 but it seems to be wrapped up for 2007 with Dorris, smith and wicks. Get on board Walker , keep up the faith.

Hey PTA MOM,3-15-07 @9:20pm:::

I was at the school last week also bringing my son to school and got a chance to talk to all of the board members who were outside with the parents.I like dorris and wicks because each time they run they keep the parents informed. Ms. dorris talked to me about comming to the board meetings and I told her and Mr. wicks that I would start comming soon. I told Ms. walke rthat she would not get my vote because she has gotten mixed up with some of the ones who dont have the children as a priority. It is a shame that she has mixed herself up with Mr. Miller and Chris Welch, She seems to be a nice lady.Nevertheless I cant vote or tell the people in my block club to voye for her because I have heard about the way the Mr. Miller carrys on at them meetings. thats why i am going to start going myself, I cant believe how a lot of people that go has expressed to me his acts as a board member. Miller is one of the board members who voted to cover up the mold and put a roof on McKinley instead of tear the building down and get a new school.. I cant vote for a man who does not support the welfare of children. Good luck Dorris, Wicks and Smith...

I was also at McKinley the other night and I am disgusted at how the politicians do what they do and that is politic. The definition of politics is "the art of compromise." "Fat Back Titty" Wicks and "The Walrus" Dorris are doing the same thing which is politics (and not as defined). On the other hand, our proud Mississippi State graduate Tommie Miller is also disgusting. I guess the old saying is true "give us your old tired rejects and we'll gladly take them." By the way, why isn't anyone talking about student achievement? Oh yeah I almost forgot, it's all about the politics. If increased student achievement occurs I guess that's a biprodct.

Anonymous March 17, 2007 7:10 AM I am glad to see you are not prejudice and have called a spade a spade. Student achievement has and is the focus of the current supt however she constantly has to put up the tricks of your Mississippi State grad and the bunch of goofs trailing behind picking up the bread crumbs of the other idiots destroying D89 and D209. Unfortunately, you have to listen and watch real close otherwise Miller and the rest will have you thinking IT IS WICKS & DORRIS. Remember this "Fat Back Titty" Wicks and "The Walrus" Dorris (as you called them) wanted McKinley rebuilt from the ground up. It was Miller, Anderson, Castrejon and Thurman that wanted to and did vote to put hundreds of thousands of dollars on the roof to cover up the problem of an unhealthy school where our children must be educated.

We all know that education is the key and we all know that priority is student achievment, but how in the hell can you begin to do that when there are so many political fences in the way . I applaud Wicks and Dorris for taking the high road to begin the sd88 team to put the focus nack on student achievment by supporting the new superintendent. She needs the support of the full board in order for her to set out an agenda for the district. After all thats what they brought her here for isnt it? Why does Miller constantly fight with the lady in the board meetings? You know everybody with a degree aint all that bright, and if anyone of you have taken the time out to sit and listen to Mr. Miller while he is on the board in these meetings, you have to question how in the hell did he ever make it through school. his articulation and appproach to a simple sentence is so iliterate. I can never understand wht the hell he is saying. does he have a disorder of some kind or does he just still have that back woods Mississippi lingo flowing from his chapped lips. Please , stop braggin about your education if you really aint all there with it. We also have to look at the Job that sd88 has accomplished facing the road to achievment. all schools made progrress except the middle school. this is a great accomplishment for sd88. the student achievment piece is comming together, we just need the board to come together but that wont be until april when tom miller is finally gone back to the city of chicago where he teaches gym.........You are a gym teacher Tommy, Stop trying to pass yourself off as an educator because you are lacking tons of knowledge and experience in the field of education. An educator you are not my friend..never will be for that matter. how the hell you recieved a degree is beyond a lot of folks .....give it up Miller, go back to the bowles of the beast from whence you came.
GAY-PHI-GAY.....

Do your research Daphnie,This is why the children of Mckinley are sick . Dont let Miller lie to you any more. I have been an employee in this district for over 15 years and I have never been so upset in my life. I will tell everyone I know to vote for Dorris, wicks and smith. I like you Daphnie but you are with the wrong group of people.

Sick!
Health ailments linked to mold at McKinley

BY JOHN HUSTON

Mold infestation at a Bellwood elementary school may some day force the school to be demolished, but it is already affecting the health of students and teachers.

The problem was found by a group of University of Illinois at Chicago nursing students who were using McKinley School, 3317 Butterfield Road, as a field project.

They were shocked to discover the school's conditions. Ceiling tiles are stained and discolored, while buckets are needed in classrooms and hallways to catch water dripping through the roof.

Musty smell

Carpeted rooms have taken on a musty, mildew smell.

When the Bellwood School District 88 Board of Education held a meeting at McKinley School on Monday, the nursing students and their advisor decided to let parents know of the school's conditions.

They had information about mold symptoms and handed out surgical masks to students as a way to get their point across to School Board members.

Students and teachers from McKinley, at the school Monday night for the Board of Education meeting, huddled around a display in the hallway made by the nursing students.

As if a game, they tried to identify their classrooms from the photographs on display.

The distinguishing characteristics were not wall decorations. Students could tell which water and mold stains on the ceilings and walls were from their rooms.

The title of the display was poignant and drew many people's attention. It read, "Welcome to your toxic school."

One teacher, who would only speak on the condition of anonymity, was sickened to see the display.

"This is the 21st century," she said. "How can we have this in our rich nation?"

She said she knew there were buckets in some rooms and that she even empties them every two to three days, but said that she didn't realize how widespread the problem is.

"You see it together," she said, pointing to the display. "This is totally unacceptable."

Phyllis Pelt, who instructs the six University of Illinois at Chicago nursing students, said she had previously spoken with a teacher who complained of chronic headaches that may be due to the mold.

Four daily Excedrins

"She takes four Excedrins every day," Pelt said, adding that the teacher was not at the School Board meeting because she can't spend more time in the building than her normal shift.

Pelt had brought six of her nursing students to McKinley for a field project -- in this case, to take the school's health index.

She is a former Bellwood resident and her two children attended McKinley School in the late '70s and early '80s.

The nursing students visited the school twice a week.

"The mold was so bad we couldn't stay in the room they gave us," Pelt said. "It's not a healthy place for children to be. It's affecting the teachers too."

One of the students, Sarah Ferguson, is a young mother from Westchester. Her son attends Westchester Intermediate School.

"The difference in the schools is very apparent," she said. "It's just really heartbreaking."

Ferguson and the other nursing students said McKinley's conditions were immediately apparent.

"On our first day here, we all had splitting headaches," she said. "We all went home and took naps, which we're not used to."

She added that she often feels like she has a lump in her throat in the days following a visit to McKinley, making it difficult to swallow.

"The kids are here every day of the week," Ferguson said. "We're here twice a week and we still feel it."

Tijuana Stewart, a mother of two McKinley students, said both of her sons have been displaying health problems.

It wasn't until she saw the information provided by the University of Illinois nursing students that she started to put 2 and 2 together.

Then she started getting angry.

"I'm upset because the problem has been going on and no one has addressed it," Stewart said.

Her youngest son, 7-year-old Jashaun, has had sore throats, sneezing attacks and nose bleeds. Jamante, 9, has even had rashes.

The symptoms, and more, could be attributed to exposure to mold, the nursing students noted.

School Board members clashed on identifying a plan to deal with the problem.

Interim Superintendent Drew Starsiak said District 88 isn't in a financial position to build a new school until 2009 at the earliest.

An agenda item calling for emergency funds to be used to replace the school's roof was quashed by members who voted against the measure.

John Wicks, who voted against spending $350,000 for the roof repair, said it would be a waste of money.

"This building cannot be fixed," he said. "The building has rotted."

Instead, he called for an evaluation of McKinley and asked for a plan to demolish it in order to build a new facility.

Board member Tommie Miller, who voted in favor of the emergency measure to repair the roof, admitted a new school is probable.

Has anyone seen Miller and his teams political brochure. Miller looks like a CRACK HEAD. Does this guy ever smile? For someone as dumb and country as him, he should at least smile and look presentable.

Mr. Highlighter.

I just want to take the time to let all residents who look on these blogs to do one thing. I stopped looking when welch started his sign war last election because I think that to much BS is on these things. But when i went to church service last week at Proviso Baptist in Maywood, the whole team of the citizens for Better Schools were there and boy did they do a great job. Proviso 209 and the Bellwood lady were outstanding....this is a winning team.this is how our school board members should be focused. they talked about education issues while those other ones talked about everything but children.......my vote AND my family, neighbor, co-workers and whoever I meet will be voting for the Yarbrough team....great job you guys.......kepp up the good work......God bless You.

You are right on the money "impressed"

Those sd88 candidates know thier stuff. Two of them came to my daughters school at 7:00 in the morning asking us what do we think the schools need to improve and other things. These are true board members and they have my vote. The other people are to mixed up in politics with the guy from the High School at Proviso. thats who Mr. Miller and the other lady is with and we will not and I mean "WE" as Bellwood would not be voting for them. I also heard that the Mayor of Bellwood turned his back on those who supported him in office. Well it may be time to replace the Mayor with another person to.

Anon March 17, 2007 9:33 a.m. I am very aware of what is going on because I live this hell everyday up close and personal. What you may have heard is that Toni "the walrus" and John "fat back titty" Wicks did pump Glover up to complain and go to the press but they slithered under a rock like the snakes they are when the heat was on. Remember Anon, a snake is a snake, is a snake, so WHEN you get bitten, don't ask why or how, just remember that snakes bite. Did you know that John Wicks is notorious for throwing the rock and hiding his hand? Did you know that his child came to school dirty everyday and that he would not respond to phone calls made to him on his DISTRICT funded phone (by the way that is his primary phone). Did you know that he and Dorris' racked up phone bills in excess of $2,400 a month. They say that they are doing school business...Yeah right! I'd like to see a printout of those records. What about you? Don't be fooled, I've worked in this district for over 30 years this is the worst that I have seen since I've been here. Whenever people ask me where I work and say Bellwood, they wonder why? I only have a few years left, so I tune out the BS and try to make it in what has turned into a ghetto hell hole. Back to your earlier comment about Walrus and Titty voting to fix McKinley. They fought the superintendent at that time (#3 in 4 years) when he made the recommendation, why because he was "on the other side." What about the children's side? Check the minutes, it's public record. Uh oh, they may be lost....I'd be interested to hear your comments.
